Weekly Photo Challenge:Future Tense

March 23, 2013 by Dragonfly Diva

This week’s photo challenge on The Daily Post is to capture something that represents the promise of the future.  This morning our family did something we had not done in a long time…we added a mark to our son’s “height chart” that is really just a part of the door frame to his room.  He’s now 13 and we started it when he was just a toddler.  Some of the first markings and dates are fairly close together – often just months apart.  As he grew there were times where we would go close to a year without measuring and marking.

When he was about six he decided he wanted a Red Rider BB gun.  After much debate my husband told him that when he was as tall as his shoulder, that he could get one.  And a line as tall as his should was added to the door frame to track progress toward that height goal.  We realized today that it had been almost two years since the last mark was made, and they have been incredible growth years for him.  He’s hit that teen eat everything in sight, grow over night kind of spurt.  He’d just gotten up and was wandering around in his bare feet, so we grabbed a Sharpie marker and he backed up to the door frame.  And we measured.  He has grown a good 6-7 inches in those two years.

To me that height chart and today’s mark are a promise of the future.  A future that we have yet to know.  A future with unlimited potential.  A future that I am looking forward to watching.

  2. Wow! Now that’s a growth spurt!

  3. Very sweet! Have you measured his feet yet? My 19 year-old son wears a 14.5 shoe size! We kept concentrating on his height and didn’t realize that his feet were doing most of the growing! He is 6’1 but no match for his 14.5 feet. 🙂

    • We didn’t measure his feet, but he passed his mother up long ago (I only wear a 5 1/2 or 6), and he is only a half size smaller than his dad so I’m betting not only will he be taller than both his parents, his feet will be bigger too! I’m having to say no to really expensive tennis shoes right now because he’s growing out of them so quickly. And don’t get me started on pants…
